Committees of the Friends

Get involved and make a difference

The following is a list of committees within the Friends of the New Hanover County Arboretum. You don’t have to be a member of the Board to be a committee member. However, the chair of each committee is a Board representative.

Executive Committee

Consists of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer, (and Vice-Treasurer as needed) who meet as needed to plan the Board’s work and fulfill tasks assigned by the Board. They serve in an advisory capacity to the Finance and Governance Committees.

Finance Committee

Maintains a clear view of The Friends' finances, tracks profit and loss by committee or project, and leads the formulation of the annual budget with input from various committee chairs. The Treasurer chairs this committee.

Governance Committee

The Board Secretary oversees this committee, ensuring that the By-Laws reflect the goals of The Friends, recruiting board members, and providing orientation for new members. They also develop and present a slate of officers for the coming year.

Development Committee

Works closely with other committees to promote and fundraise for the Arboretum. They maintain a shared marketing calendar and develop strategies to increase awareness, attendance, and membership. This committee is responsible to manage and promote memberships and update benefits.

Fundraising Committee

Seeks contributions from donors and sponsors, develops fundraising ideas, and manages grant applications..

Gift Shop Committee

Manages inventory, coordinates volunteers, and creates marketing promotions for the gift shop.

Special Events Committee

Special Events Committee: Promotes the Arboretum's Gardens for special events and works with the Marketing Committee on event promotion.

Art in the Arboretum Committee

Works with the Art Show Steering Committee and Coordinator to oversee the event, recruit volunteers, sponsors, and assist in the many facets of the annual show.

Other Ways You Can Help

At times other committees are formed when needed, which provide additional ways for you to become involved with The Friends.:

  • Ad Hoc Technology & Communication Committee: Oversees the website and social media platforms to increase the Arboretum's following.

If you're interested in serving or volunteering on one of these committees, you don’t have to be a board member to do so. Simply send an email to friendsofthenhcarboretum@gmail.com to let us know of your intention.
